New Paradigms in Pain Management: Implication for OC/PT Therapists
This course discusses new research in the processing of pain in the context of CNS neuroplasticity, the neuromatrix of the body-self, and interventions which alter the unique genetically determined neurosignature. It specifically addresses limbic influences on pain and pain perception, the role of the cerebral cortex in pain perception, and the reclassification of chronic pain, owing to altered CNS processing, as a chronic disease. This information will be discussed in the context of implications for, and a description of, therapeutic interventions that have been found to effect positive neuroplasticity of the CNS. Pediatric Pain Management
Pain is a complex healthcare problem that can affect the physical and emotional well being of children. Poorly controlled pain can have undesirable effects on the child's physiological, metabolic and emotional status. Many leading organizations such as the American Pain Society, the American Academy of Pain Medicine, and the American Academy of Pediatrics are calling for better pain management in this vulnerable population. Pain Management for Health Professionals
The under-treatment of pain is causing much needless suffering, according to recent research. Many leading pain organizations such as the American Pain Society and American Academy of Pain Medicine are calling for better education on pain management. This class will cover an overview of pain in America, including barriers toeffective pain management and the truth about addiction. It will also address the key to proper assessment, neuropathic pain and pharmacological interventions. Discussion of a multidisciplinary approach is given, along with case studies and specifics about practicing in Oregon. This workshop meets 6 contact hours of mandated education in Pain Management, required by the Oregon State Board of Nursing, for registered nurses and nurse practitioners.
